Yaya Toure reveals Pep Guardiola has IGNORED his attempts to apologise for claiming his old boss has ‘problems with Africans’… and opens up on his new ‘texting’ friendship with his great rival, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp
- Yaya Toure accused Pep Guardiola of ‘having problems with Africans’ in 2018
- The Ivory Coast icon subsequently wrote a letter of apology to his former boss
- It has never been acknowledged and Toure would like to re-establish contact
Yaya Toure has revealed he still hasn’t heard from his former boss Pep Guardiola since delivering an apology for comments he made about the Spaniard’s ability work with Africans four years ago.
Toure had two spells working under Guardiola during his trophy-laden career, winning the Champions League together at Barcelona before reuniting at Manchester City in the Premier League.
Toure’s last season at the Etihad ended on a sour note as he made just one start in the final home game of the season with the title already wrapped up.
Yaya Toure accused his old boss Pep Guardiola of having ‘problems with Africans’ in 2018
Speaking to France Football after leaving City, he questioned his former boss’s attitude towards Africans and stated in the interview: ‘It got to the point I asked myself if it was because of my colour. I am not the first. Other Barcelona players asked the question.’
Toure, who is now looking to forge his own path into management, wrote to Guardiola to apologise for his public comments. However, he has revealed that his attempts to build bridges have never been acknowledged.
‘I put that in the past and put it down to the Covid situation,’ he told The Times in an interview when asked about the lack of communication from the City head coach.
Toure played under the Spaniard at both Manchester City and Barcelona during his career
‘I wish to see him. I will be delighted. I need to talk to people who have a passion for football. I haven’t been in touch with him because I don’t have his number.’
One individual whose number Toure does have is Jurgen Klopp. The 38-year-old – who has his own ambitions to move into management – was invited to watch Liverpool during a pre-season camp last summer, during which time he got to know the German technician.
Toure had been invited along by his friend Sadio Mane, and has since struck up a relationship with the Reds boss that sees the pair message regularly.
Toure revealed that he is also in regular contact with Jurgen Klopp and they text each other
And he revealed that he would have no problems in congratulating Liverpool and their head coach should they hunt down his former club in this season’s incredible title race.
‘I hope City will win it because I am City fan, but it’s so unpredictable and Liverpool are so, so strong,’ he said.
‘Klopp, when he wins games, I text him and he is delighted and he always invites me [to meet him] and texts me back. Does this guy rest? I don’t think so, he loves football. He’s a top, top, guy.’
