Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Rebecca Marino both are heading to the second round at the season-opening ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand.
The third-seeded Fernandez, from Laval, Que., crushed 15-year-old Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova 6-1, 6-1 on Monday, while the eighth-seeded Marino, from North Vancouver, B.C. downed Dalma Galfi of Hungary 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Fernandez will face the winner of a match between Austria’s Julia Grabher and Tereza Martincová of the Czech Republic in the second round, while Marino draws Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium next.
The Canadians would meet in the quarterfinals if they both win their next matches.
