I love making things from scratch. Not only does it save money, but I feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that I can make it. So far my best efforts have been in food and cleaning supplies. I never learned how to sew (other than the occasional button) or knit, but maybe someday…
Here are some of my favorite things that we make on a regular basis.
Cloth Diaper Detergent
All Purpose Cleaner for sinks, counter-tops, mirrors, floors: This is embarrassingly simple; not a recipe at all! We use straight white vinegar in a spray bottle. Yes, the smell is a little strong, but IT WORKS! Once the vinegar smell disperses (and yes, your whole house smells like pickles for a bit) it works as air deodorizer, and the whole house smells clean! If the smell is too strong for you, you can dilute it with a little water.
Tub/Toilet/Porcelain sink cleaner: again, not a recipe per se. We sprinkle baking soda in the tub, toilet, or sink. It is abrasive enough to cut through grime and soap scum, and deodorizes as well! To disinfect, use vinegar spray and wipe clean.
